Project Update 2021-06-30

RAPID CITY, S.D. – June 30, 2021 – Concrete paving continues on the north side of Omaha Street from the soccer fields west to Deadwood Avenue into next week.

Crews are placing concrete in the north leg of the Deadwood Avenue intersection and will work on tie-ins to West Chicago Street as well.

Work continues on the Rapid Creek Bridge for pile driving, foundations, and walls for widening on the north side of the bridge. A new water diversion was installed on the west side of Rapid Creek. The bike path that travels under the Rapid Creek Bridge is currently closed and is anticipated to remain closed through October 2021.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation advises that bicyclists and pedestrians find an alternate route when traveling on the bike path near the Rapid Creek Bridge on Omaha Street in Rapid City. A detour from Founder’s Park at Cross Street, west to Mountain View Road, south to West Main Street and west to Rapid Creek is available but is not recommended for recreational use. Travel on this detour route provides a means to traverse the bike path through the work zone but is not intended for recreational use or consistent thru traffic. Those using the bike path for recreation are encouraged to discover, explore, and enjoy the path outside of the work zone of the project. Maps of the detour route are posted at both ends of the closure and are available on the project website.

Motorists are asked to be aware of suddenly slowing and merging traffic, changing work zone locations, reduced speeds through the work zone, and construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lanes.

Additional information will be provided as phasing, access, and traffic control changes with the progression of the project.

To view the entire scope of the project, with the phasing and traffic control plans as well as weekly updates, please visit the project website or the project ArcGIS StoryMap at: Interested persons can also follow the project on Facebook, “Omaha Street Reconstruction,” and on Twitter, “Omaha Street Reconstruction@FerbEngCo.” The public may leave a message at (605)343-3311 with any questions or concerns regarding this reconstruction project.
